Our Programs

Walker Street Community Kindergarten recognises that children, their families and the community benefit from high quality early childhood programs. We understand that early years lay the foundation for success in later life.

We follow play-based but educational learning programs that stimulate interest in: maths; science; technology; language; visual arts; social studies; environmental and community awareness; music; drama; health and physical development. Teachers find a balance between active and passive experiences with an emphasis on open-ended, indoor and outdoor play using natural materials. The programs provides opportunity for solo, small group and large group experiences.

Children are given time and space to explore, manipulate, experiment, create and discover in an environment that promotes flexibility and spontaneity. Children are given opportunities to take responsibility, make decisions, and learn through the choices they make. Guidance and support is provided for all children throughout their learning journeys, and promoting children’s positive feelings of self-worth is the focus of all interactions. Cultural backgrounds and experiences of all children are incorporated into the teaching strategies and respectfully acknowledged by the educators.

* Funded 4 year old kindergarten places

All children are eligible to access a funded kindergarten program of 15 hours per week for 40 weeks (or 600 hours) in the year before school. Families of children with birth dates between 1 January and 30 April have a choice about whether their child will commence school in the year they turn five or the following year, and therefore whether they commence kindergarten in the year they turn four or the year they turn five. Prior to enrolment, families with children who are born between 1 January and 30 April are advised to choose carefully, as children are only funded for one year of kindergarten before school (unless they are eligible for an Early Start Kindergarten grant or a second year of funded kindergarten).
